Details/Context:

TrumpCare:

After 27 hours of continuous debate, the House Energy & Commerce Committee voted yesterday to approve the GOP's ACA repeal bill, which critics on both sides of the aisle have variously labeled "TrumpCare" or "RyanCare." The two versions of the bill (one from the Energy & Commerce Committee and one from the Ways & Means Committee) will now go to the House Budget Committee, which is expected to meet on Wednesday, March 15 to merge the two bills. A vote by the full House on the final bill is expected in early April.

Notably, a number of Republican lawmakers have expressed concern over their party's repeal bill, with some outright stating that they will oppose it. The Hill has compiled a list, which it will keep updated as the situation develops:

Seema Verma

The motion of cloture on the nomination of Seema Verma as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services passed yesterday on a vote of 54-44. The full Senate vote on her confirmation is scheduled for 5:30 PM EDT (2:30 PM PDT) this coming Monday, March 13, 2017.

Senator Dianne Feinstein released a statement yesterday noting her opposition to Verma's nomination, stating "She has said that the poorest Americans need to have ‘skin in the game’ and pay more for their health care—a popular policy among Republicans" and "Verma also made deeply troubling statements in her confirmation hearings, stating that she thought insurance companies should not be required to cover maternity care."

See the March 8 notes for details on Verma's history of Medicaid cuts and changes in Indiana.

The following Democrats and independents voted "yes" on Verma's cloture motion:

Muslim Ban 2.0

Yesterday the Washington State Attorney General said that his would challenge the new Muslim travel ban in court. Washington State will be joined by the states of Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and Massachussetts in the lawsuit. This new suit follows a separate action by the state of Hawaii against the ban in federal court. As noted here before, the new ban is broadly similar to the original ban, but the Administration hopes its changes will make the ban more difficult to defeat in court.

Conclusion/Call Script Overview

Today I will be calling both of my Senators to thank them for opposing Seema Verma's nomination. I will also ask them to use procedural tactics to slow down Senate business, in order to increase pressure on the Senate to overturn the new Muslim ban and push for an investigation into the Administration's ties to Russia.

I'll also call my Congressman to thank him again for holding the line on ACA repeal.

Script for Calling Dianne Feinstein

"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm calling from _____ (zip code). I wanted to thank Senator Feinstein for publicly opposing the nomination of Seema Verma as CMS Administrator and voting against yesterday's cloture motion. I think that Verma's preference to raise costs to the most vulnerable parts of our society are unconscionable. I'm also calling because I would like to ask Senator Feinstein to continue working to overturn the new Muslim travel ban and to get the Administration's ties to Russia fully investigated. So I would like the Senator to object to all calls for unanimous consent until the ban is overturned and a special prosecutor is appointed to investigate the Russia situation. Thank you."
