Details/Context:

TrumpCare

Markup sessions on the GOP's ACA repeal bill (now widely being called the "TrumpCare" bill) lasted all day yesterday and through the night in both the House Ways & Means Committee and the House Energy & Commerce Committee. The bill eventually received a vote in the Ways & Means Committee early this morning after over 15 hours of debate, with Republicans approving it on a 23-16 vote.

At the time of this post, the Energy & Commerce Committee is still debating their bill, the markup session having lasted over 26 hours so far.

Republicans in both committees have so far blocked every amendment offered by the Democrats.

See yesterday's notes for more details.

HJ. Res. 58:

House Joint Resolution 58, which disapproved a Department of Education rule for teacher training programs, passed the Senate yesterday. See yesterday's notes for more information about the rule.

The following Democrats and independents voted to disapprove the rule:

Seema Verma:

The Senate will vote today on the motion of cloture on the confirmation of Seema Verma as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS). See yesterday's notes for more information and details about Verma and her role in Medicaid cuts and changes in Indiana.

A motion of cloture on nominees other than to the Supreme Court requires a simple majority to pass in the Senate. If it passes, debate on Verma's confirmation will be limited to 30 hours. The vote is expected at 1:45 PM EST (10:45 AM PST) today, setting up a final vote on Verma's confirmation as early as 7:45 PM EST tomorrow (Friday, March 10, 2017), possibly Monday or Tuesday next week.

Conclusion/Call Script Overview

Today I will call my Congressman (a member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee) and thank him for the hard work he and his Democratic colleagues have put in yesterday and last night, and to encourage him to continue today.

I will also be calling both of my Senators to ask them to oppose Seema Verma's confirmation as CMS Administrator.
