May 1, 2017: Weekly Actions
The resistance continues as strong as ever here in San Diego. On Saturday, Trump's 100th day in office, over 5,000 San Diegans joined the People's Climate March, including members from many of the county's Indivisible chapters. And we also have reason to celebrate as Californians, as committees in our state legislature voted to advance bills to protect our worksites from ICE enforcement, to increase transparency in campaign finance, and to implement single-payer healthcare in our state. Thanks in no small part to hearing from everyday citizens like you and me, the Assembly also scrapped a harmful voter ID law. Our representatives are hearing our voices, and we are making a difference as we stand indivisible!
Recommended Actions for the Week of May 1:
- Last week, House Republicans postponed a vote on their disastrous TrumpCare bill yet again, but they are far from finished. More action is expected this week as GOP leadership tries to round up the votes to pass their newly amended bill, which would not only rip coverage away from 24 million Americans, but would effectively kill protections for pre-existing conditions and would allow insurers to dramatically raise premiums on seniors. Please take the time to call your House Representative and let them know you oppose TrumpCare.
- AB-699 is up for a vote in the California Assembly Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. If you have a representative on that committee, please call and tell them to keep ICE out of our schools.
- The House Financial Services Committee is meeting tomorrow (May 2) to markup HR. 10, a bill that would dismantle many of the crucial protections enacted by the Dodd-Frank Act, making another financial crisis like the one in 2008 much more likely. If you have a representative on that committee, the national Indivisible Team has put together a call script for opposing the bill. (In San Diego County, Rep. Juan Vargas of the 51st District is on the committee.)
