Details/Context:

Russia:

Yesterday, the Washington Post broke news that the President had revealed highly classified intelligence to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador during their visit to the Oval Office last week. Shortly thereafter, Reuters and the New York Times confirmed the Washington Post's reporting.

Though the President is technically allowed to reveal whatever information he chooses, the US officials quoted in the Washington Post article noted that sharing this information jeopardized the source of the intelligence, which could be identified and compromised from the information shared. Additionally, since the intelligence came to the US via an allied nation's intelligence service, this move will likely make US allies less likely to share sensitive intelligence with us, reducing our awareness of and ability to respond to foreign threats.

Conclusion/Call Script Overview

Today I will be calling both of my US Senators and asking them to commit to slowing down Senate business until and unless both an independent commission is formed and an independent special prosecutor is appointed to investigate Russian ties to the Administration.

I will also call my House Representative to thank him for his statement calling for the GOP to put country before party, and to ask him to continue making this issue a priority.

For more information about how individual Senators can apply pressure by slowing down Senate business, see this Indivisible Guide explainer about withholding consent and filibustering.

If you are not from California, you can find contact information for all U.S. Senators here: https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/

If you don't know who your Representative in the House, you can look it up here: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Script for Calling Dianne Feinstein

"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm calling from _____ (zip code). I'm calling to ask Senator Feinstein to please use all possible methods to pressure the Senate into establishing an independent Russia commission and getting the DOJ to appoint a special prosecutor. I appreciate the statements Senator Feinstein has made so far, and I appreciate that she has co-sponsored S. 27, but I don't believe that these efforts are sufficient anymore. The foundations of our democracy are under assault, and rational Senators must do everything possible to protect our nation. So I'd like for the Senator to please object to every motion in the Senate and oppose every cloture motion and every executive nomination until and unless we can have an independent commission and a special prosecutor. Thank you."

Script for Calling Kamala Harris

"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm calling from _____ (zip code). I'm calling to ask Senator Harris to please use all possible methods to pressure the Senate into establishing an independent Russia commission and getting the DOJ to appoint a special prosecutor. I appreciate the statements Senator Harris has made so far, but I don't believe that these efforts are sufficient anymore, especially considering that she hasn't even co-sponsored S. 27 yet. The foundations of our democracy are under assault, and rational Senators must do everything possible to protect our nation. So I'd like for the Senator to please object to every motion in the Senate and oppose every cloture motion and every executive nomination until and unless we can have an independent commission and a special prosecutor. Thank you."

Script for Calling Scott Peters

"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm calling from _____ (zip code). I'm calling because I saw Congressman Peters' strong statement this morning calling for Republicans to put country before party, and I wanted to thank him for that. I truly believe that we are in the midst of a constitutional crisis, and rational, patriotic Members of Congress must do everything possible to make this issue a priority. Please continue to speak out about an independent commission and special prosecutor, and do whatever possible to get measures like HR. 356 to the House floor. Thank you."
