June 29, 2017: A Pair of Anti-Immigrant Bills
- The House will vote today on two anti-immigrant bills: HR. 3003 ("No Sanctuary for Criminals Act") and HR. 3004 ("Kate's Law").
HR. 3003 and HR. 3004:
The House will vote today on two anti-immigrant bills: HR. 3003, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, and HR. 3004, Kate's Law.
HR. 3003, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, would prohibit any law, person, or agency from restricting government agencies and their personnel from assisting or cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Any state or local jurisdiction that does restrict cooperation with federal immigration enforcement would be ineligible to receive federal law enforcement grants. The bill would also require state and local law enforcement to comply with federal immigration "detainers"—requests from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to detain suspects up to 48 hours longer than otherwise allowable if the suspect may be deportable.
HR. 3004, Kate's Law, would impose harsher punishments on undocumented immigrants who enter the US without permission. For example, undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of three or more misdemeanors of any sort (including driving without a license or loitering) would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Additionally, undocumented immigrants who are caught re-entering the US three or more times would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison, regardless of whether or not they had ever committed any crimes. As described by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, "In short, H.R. 3004 proposes to impose harsher penalties on individuals who are driven to flee to the United States because their lives are in danger in their home counties or because they want to reunify with their U.S. citizen children."
Call to Action
Today I will be calling my House Representative and asking him to vote NO on both HR. 3003 and HR. 3004.

Script for Calling Scott Peters
"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm calling from _____ (zip code). I'm calling to ask Congressman Peters to vote against HR. 3003 and HR. 3004. Not only are these bills anti-immigrant and immoral, but they'd also be harmful to our economy in California and especially San Diego, where we know that immigration and working together across the border is good for everyone. Thank you."
